SUMMARY:More Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Struggling filmmaker Lee Kazimir reads some advice from Werne
r Herzog that filmmakers should skip film school and instead 'make a jo
 urney alone\, on foot\, for a distance of 5\,000 kilometers\, let's say
from Madrid to Kiev.'\n \n Kazimir decides to take the advice literally\
, walking for six months and through seven countries from Madrid to Kiev
while documenting the journey with a videocamera.\n \n Along the way he
confronts physical struggles and meets a varied cast of characters on t
he road. He learns some essential lessons\, realizing ultimately that 'b
efore Art\, comes Life.'\n \n More Shoes is a diary picture that serves
both as an account of an artistic coming-of-age and as a snail's-eye por
trait of Europe in the early 21st century.

SUMMARY:Greetings From the Shore
DESCRIPTION:Still reeling from the death of her father\, a young girl spe
nds one last summer at the Jersey Shore before heading off to college. B
ut when her plans fall apart\, the girl stumbles into a mysterious world
  of Russian sailors\, high-stakes gambling\, and unexpected love.\n \n D
rawn from the coming-of-age experiences of writer Gabrielle Berberich\,
'Greetings From The Shore' is part memoir\, part fairytale. The film was
shot on an island off the coast of New Jersey\, Barnegat Island\, in th
e same seaside town where the real events occurred to Berberich. Like th
e setting\, each character is an island. They are loners\, dreamers brou
ght together by fate for one chance summer. An ensemble cast brings thes
e vivid characters to life\, including Paul Sorvino\, David Fumero\, Jay
  O. Sanders\, and Kim Shaw in a debut performance. The film is an homage
to coming-of-age classics like 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Mystic Pizza\,' whi
le in its own right\, 'Greetings From The Shore' is a unique and persona
l story. It's a love letter in the sand\, a tribute to the Jersey Shore\
, and a postcard from summers past

SUMMARY:Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to global warming\, humanity may be approaching it's e
nd soon. Unfortunately the general public seems to feel they've heard en
ough about this\, and are bored with the subject. There remains only one
reliable pathway to still reach people -- COMEDY! In the great traditio
n of movies like 'Dr. Strangelove' (for atomic warfare)\, 'Life Is Beaut
iful' (the Holocaust)\, and 'Mash' (the Korean War)\, 'Sizzle\,' uses th
e comedy of a mockumentary/reality/documentary hybrid to examine a deadl
y serious issue from a different\, lighter perspective. The film is like
a peanut M&M -- a very serious nugget wrapped inside a sweet and silly
 coating.

SUMMARY:FLOW: For Love of Water
DESCRIPTION:Water is the essence of life\, sustaining every being on this
planet. Without water\, there would simply be no plants\, no animals\,
and no people. But the global water supply isn't just at risk\, it's alr
eady in crisis.\n \n FLOW: For Love Of Water highlights the local intima
cies of an emerging global catastrophe: African plumbers reconnect shant
ytown water pipes under cover of darkness to ensure a community's surviv
al\; a Californian scientist forces awareness of shockingly toxic public
water sources\; a ‘Big Water’ CEO argues privatization is the wave of t
he future\; a “Water Guru” in India sparks new community water initiativ
es in hundreds of villages\; a Canadian author uncovers the corporate pr
ofiteering that drives global water business.\n \n With an unflinching f
ocus on politics\, pollution and human rights\, FLOW: For Love of Water
ensures that the precarious relationship between humanity and water can
no longer be ignored. While specifics of locality and issue may differ\,
the message is the same\; water\, and our future as a species\, is quic
kly drying up. Armed with a thirst for survival\, people around the worl
d are fighting for their birthright\; unless we instigate change\, we fa
ce a world in which only those that can pay for their water will survive
. FLOW: For Love of Water\, is a catalyst for people everywhere: the tim
e has come to turn the tide and we can't wait any longer.

SUMMARY:Bending Spaces: George Rousse and The Durham Project
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a visionary French artist meets the creativ
e spirit of a former Tobacco Road town in the midst of a downtown revita
lization? A singular grassroots arts project emerges that confounds expe
ctations and takes the city of Durham\, North Carolina by storm as build
ings from a past incarnation of the city are transformed into temporary
canvases for dramatic public art.\n\nBending Space: Georges Rousse and T
he Durham Project captures the genius of French photographer and install
ation artist Georges Rousse and follows the artist and two hundred volun
teers during a September 2006 art residency in Durham. The film includes
interviews with Rousse\, project coordinators and volunteers\, and peop
le on the street as they visit the installations. Bending Space reveals
the complex process of creating Rousse's signature trompe l'oeil illusio
ns of color and shape that ultimately become the stunning large format c
olor photographs exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Th
e film is witness to the energy that is unleashed when a remarkable arti

SUMMARY:The Powder & the Glory
DESCRIPTION:The Powder & the Glory tells the story of two of the first hi
ghly successful women entrepreneurs—Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstei
 n. One hundred years ago they immigrated to America and\, starting with
next to nothing\, created what is today the $150 billion global health a
nd beauty industry.\n \nOperating in major cities all over the world\, t
heir competing companies defined the business of beauty\, making cosmeti
cs both newly respectable and\, finally\, indispensable. They developed
advertising and marketing techniques that became part of the business la
ndscape\, and they themselves became household names and cultural icons.
\n \nTheir accomplishments continue to be relevant to businesspeople tod
ay. This is an inspiring story about perseverance\, genuine creativity\,
and continual reinvention to meet the changing needs and demands of con
sumers and society. When they started their businesses\, makeup was used
mostly by prostitutes and performers\, and businesses were run mostly b
y men. They changed the way we look at ourselves\, built powerful busine
sses\, and became two of the world’s wealthiest women.\n \nThey influenc
ed\, and were influenced by\, the major movements of the day in art and
style. When the “close-up” became a staple of motion pictures\, makeup b
ecame au courant. Women flocked to Madame Rubinstein and Miss Arden. But
although they lived and worked only blocks apart in New York for over 5
0 years\, the two women\, by design\, never met! Their competition drove
them both to great creativity and success. Whenever one launched a succ
essful product\, the other sought to outdo her rival with a bigger succe
 ss.

SUMMARY:Julie Talen: Filmmaker in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Multichannel digital media artist Julie Talen will be one of
4 filmmakers in residence this summer. Best know for her pioneering work
in multichannel format vision and sound productions\, Julie will screen
her powerful film PRETEND and 60 Cameras Against the War. On Wednesday
\, Julie will discuss the process of making a multichannel film and the
process of layering both image and sound. She will demonstrate how\, b
y stripping or adding layers\, she can completely change a film that you
\, as the viewer might not be aware of.\n\n1. MONDAY SCREENING: Simultan
eity - images that are divided in place but connected in time - is proba
bly the most common use of multi-frame work\, from the split screen of a
baseball game\, to surveillance cameras on a nine-grid to popular TV sh
ows. For filmmaker Julie Talen\, the divided frame - increasingly evide
nt in our screen-based reality - is a new visual language of its own\,
and in '60 cameras against the war\,' Talen unearthed unexpected synchro
nicities among random digital videos taken in the massive but little-see
n anti-war rally held in New York City on Feb 15\, 2003\, just days bef
ore the invasion of Iraq. The mea culpa of 'oh\, who knew? We all believ
ed the administration' is put to the lie here\, all the more effectively
because the use of simultaneous footage shows how thousands of people w
ere trapped by the NYPD on nearby streets while the rally itself had roo
m to spare. Talen will discuss how these videos were tracked down\, pai
nstakingly put on time lines and edited together to make this film\, whi
ch premiered at the Whitney Museum during the RNC in 2004\; and she'll g
ive other examples of how the simultaneous camera is used in fiction and
documentaries\, in her own work and others.\n\n2: WEDNESDAY SCREENING -
Talen explores and explodes the divided frame well beyond simultaneity
in her award-winning fiction feature\, Pretend\, which A.O. Scott of the
New York Times called "a harrowing\, dazzling film\," and the Village
Voice lauded as unveiling "a new graphic vocabulary." In Pretend\, a si
mple but clear narrative thread - the story of two girls who try to terr
ify their parents into staying together - is the scaffolding on which to
build experiments in multichannel narrative. After discussing simultan
eity in Monday's screening\, in Pretend\, we'll look at more complex way
s to connect images that are cut up on the screen: visual fugues\, realt
 ime scenes\, framing\, borders\, layers and superimposition.\nWhat you s
ee is very influenced by what you hear and creatively changing the sound
track changes how you experience the film: electronic music does one thi
ng\, Prokovief another\, new voice-over from the characters' something e
lse. Talen will premiere the new audio tracks for the upcoming DVD of Pr
etend by Re-Voir. Few\, if any\, films avail themselves of the DVD's cap
acity for new audio tracks\, other than adding audio commentary or dubbe
d languages. This screening will be a sneak preview of the work-in-progr
ess of Pretend with new audio.\n

SUMMARY:Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North
DESCRIPTION:In this first-person documentary\, filmmaker Katrina Browne t
ells the story of her forebears\, the largest slave-trading family in ea
rly America. From 1770 to 1820\, three generations of DeWolfs transporte
d over ten thousand Africans into slavery. They sailed the ships\, made
the rum to be traded in West Africa\, operated sugar and coffee plantati
ons in Cuba\, had an auction house\, an insurance company\, and a bank.\
n \n Contrary to the national myth that stigmatizes the South for slaver
y and credits the North with abolition\, Browne's ancestors were from Rh
ode Island. While the DeWolfs were unique in terms of the dynasty they c
reated\, the constellation of ventures operated by them and other elites
involved an enormous portion of the Northern population. Middle class c
itizens bought shares in slave ships\; New England farmers sold foodstuf
fs to plantations in the West Indies\; immigrant textile workers process
ed Southern cotton in Northern mills.\n \n In the film\, Browne narrates
a remarkable journey with nine family members that brings them face-to-
face with New England's hidden enterprise. The family (ages 32-70) retra
ces the steps of the Triangle Trade--journeying from their old hometown
in Rhode Island\, to slave forts in Ghana and former plantations in Cuba
. Browne pushes them forward as they bumble their way through the minefi
eld of race politics\, and debates about reparations and repair. In the
end\, they come face-to-face with their love/hate relationship to Yankee
culture as they struggle with how to take public action given all that
 they now know.

SUMMARY:Rooters...The Birth of Red Sox Nation
DESCRIPTION: 'Rooters: The Birth Of Red Sox Nation' is the compelling doc
umentary of the pioneering baseball fans known as the Royal Rooters. Hai
ling from the Roxbury section of Boston\, Massachusetts\, their dedicati
on and support of local baseball clubs in the late nineteenth century\,
spawned a national craze that helped create our modern day sports fan cu
lture. Originally sparked by the passion of 250 fanatics led by JFK’s gr
andfather\, “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald\, and barkeep Michael “Nuf Ced” McGr
eevy\, the city of Boston has cultivated a rich history of loyal basebal
l fans who have passed their undying support for their home teams along
to each new generation like a family heirloom. The film presents comment
ary from baseball historians such as John Thorn and Peter Gammons\, whil
e insider reminiscences from Red Sox legend\, Johnny Pesky and grandchil
dren of the original Royal Rooters who christened Fenway Park in 1912\,
present a rare view into the lives of these remarkable men.\n\nRooters t
ies together the past and present and expresses how important Boston was
at the turn of the century as the center of the sporting\, gambling and
political worlds.\nUtilizing rare photographs and films\, the film capt
ures the essence of what it meant to be a Royal Rooter\, and what it mea
ns today to be a member of Red Sox Nation. A historical and vivid pictur

ion of fourth and fifth generation Rooters who carry the torch into the

SUMMARY:Moving Midway
DESCRIPTION:At Christmas 2003\, New York-based film critic Godfrey Cheshi
re is visiting his family in North Carolina when his cousin Charlie Silv
er tells him something startling. Charlie inherited Midway Plantation\,
the ancestral home of his and Cheshire’s extended family\, and has been
its devoted caretaker. But now Charlie and his wife Dena have made a dec
ision: They want to move Midway – the antebellum manor house and several
outbuildings – to a new location to escape Raleigh’s encroaching sprawl
.\n \n Can you really transplant a plantation? Will the “place” be the s
ame if it is uprooted from the soil in which it has stood since 1848? Ch
arlie’s plan provokes immediate controversy in Cheshire’s tradition-mind
ed family. For Cheshire\, it brings back memories of the wild\, strange
and magical place Midway seemed when he was a child\, and of the stories
he heard there – stories of his mother’s family\, the Hintons\, settlin
g the area in the early 1700s\, fighting in the Revolution\, being invad
ed by Yankee troops in the Civil War\, and surviving Reconstruction.\n \
n Yet stories\, Cheshire realizes\, both convey and conceal. The reality
of the Southern plantation was that it depended on the institution of s
lavery. In Cheshire’s family\, stories of slaves always depicted them as
happy and devoted\, which surely disguised a more painful\, complex rea

For years\, they have rarely encountered each other. But that begins to
change as Cheshire sets out to chronicle Charlie’s attempt to move Midw

SUMMARY:Mountain Top Removal
DESCRIPTION:Most of the nation's electricity comes from coal. More than o
ne-third of this is produced in Appalachia\, and West Virginia produces
the most coal in that region. One of these mines is located less than 40
0 yards up a hill from Marsh Fork Elementary\, where defenseless childre
n are exposed to toxic elements that contribute to Alzheimer's\, kidney
failure\, asthma\, and common colds that just never go away. Fifth-grade
r Kayla\, her spirited grandfather Ed Wiley and an impassioned crowd of
supporters initiate a campaign to raise money to build a new school\, bu
t Governor Joe Manchin makes no promises. While Ed walks from Charleston
to Washington D.C. raising awareness and funds\, we meet other West Vir
ginia residents whose homes\, health and environment are being destroyed
by mountain top removal coal mining. Maria Gunnoe's property has floode
d 7 times in 5 years\, and Carmilita Brown has had black water coming fr
om her tap for twenty years - all due to the mining of the Coal River va
lley. These gripping personal accounts are complemented by revealing int
erviews from conservation groups\, physicians\, scientists\, and coal fi
eld activists. Both engrossing and alarming\, Mountain Top Removal not o
nly changes the way we see a mountain landscape\, but it also connects u
s to the people living next to coal slurry ponds \, a by-product of our
 ever-increasing need for electricity.

SUMMARY:Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to global warming\, humanity may be approaching it's e

SUMMARY:Secrecy
DESCRIPTION:In a single recent year the U.S. classified about five times
the number of pages added to the Library of Congress. We live in a world
where the production of secret knowledge dwarfs the production of open
knowledge. Depending on whom you ask\, government secrecy is either the
key to victory in our struggle against terrorism\, or our Achilles heel.
But is so much secrecy a bad thing?\n \n Secrecy saves: counter-terrori
st intelligence officers recall with fury how a newspaper article descri
bing National Security Agency abilities directly led to the loss of info
rmation that could have avoided the terrorist killing of 241 soldiers in
Beirut late in October 1983. Secrecy guards against wanton nuclear prol
iferation\, against the spread of biological and chemical weapons. Secre
cy is central to our ability to wage an effective war against terrorism.
\n \n Secrecy corrupts. From extraordinary rendition to warrant-less wir
etaps and Abu Ghraib\, we have learned that\, under the veil of classifi
cation\, even our leaders can give in to dangerous impulses. Secrecy inc
reasingly hides national policy\, impedes coordination among agencies\,
bloats budgets and obscures foreign accords\; secrecy throws into the da
rk our system of justice and derails the balance of power between the ex
ecutive branch and the rest of government.\n \n This film is about the v
ast\, invisible world of government secrecy. By focusing on classified s
ecrets\, the government's ability to put information out of sight if it
would harm national security\, Secrecy explores the tensions between our
safety as a nation\, and our ability to function as a democracy.

SUMMARY:Twelve
DESCRIPTION:This eclectic but unified collection of short stories forms b
oth a love letter both to Boston and an impressive showcase for the area
's burgeoning indie filmmaking scene. Executive producer Scott Masterson
conceived an experimental collaborative project in which each film is w
ritten and directed by a different filmmaker\, while all of the artists
were required to contribute in some way to every other short in the proj
ect. Knowing cohesion would allow the project to shine\, he devised a si
mple but inspired theme: each of the twelve films represents a month of
the year and was shot entirely in that month. The directors simply had t
o capture the spirit of their month however they wished.\n\nThe result i
 s a smorgasbord of different genres: comedy\, drama\, ghost story\, crim
 e melodrama\, documentary\, and even-quite unexpectedly-musical. Togethe
 r we meet a robot-sport inventor\, a young woman obsessed with following
a stranger\, several beekeepers\, and a man who hasn't slept in two yea
rs. What holds these variety of visions together is its local flavor: TW
ELVE guides us from famous sightseeing spots to familiar neighborhoods\,
beckoning us into Boston's bookstores\, bars\, and candlepin bowling al
leys\, leading us along the Charles and down Mass Ave. Part of the fun l
ies in spotting the different ways each filmmaker incorporates a particu
lar Public Garden tree and in recognizing characters from one film when
they pop up in another. It is this combination of individual creation an
d collaborative inventiveness that makes this film both unique in itself
  and distinctively Bostonian.
