SUMMARY:Ice Bears Of The Beaufort
DESCRIPTION:Ice Bears of the Beaufort documents a tragedy unfolding right
in front of the camera. With its subjects oblivious to the impending lo
ss of their arctic sanctuary\, this film shows a thriving polar bear soc
iety on the edge of survival. This non-narrated\, high-definition docume
ntary bears witness to Alaska's Beaufort Sea coast as critical polar bea
r habitat. Five years in the making by a single resident of an Inupiat
Eskimo village\, Ice Bears of the Beaufort is a color-intense\, cinemati
c family portrait of Alaskan polar bears never before captured on film.
The body of the movie chronicles polar bear activity and year-round util
ization of the coastal and offshore areas of the Arctic National Wildlif
e Refuge and the adjacent Beaufort Sea. This region of the Alaskan arct
ic is not a blank slate. In the context of a raging world debate\, this
film exposes the truth about the impact that an offshore oilfield would
have as polar bears face climate change and receding polar ice is the gr
eatest threat to their continued existence. The movie’s instrumental sco
re\, Glaciation\, is a powerful musical mirror reflecting the austere ar
ctic imagery of the film. In an unrivaled marriage of image and music\,
filmmaker Arthur C. Smith III collaborated with Nashville composer/musi
cian Patrick O’Hearn to create the fullest expression of the depth and s
ubtlety that is the arctic - an arctic eden... a polar bear sanctuary.

SUMMARY:The Cove
DESCRIPTION:The Cove begins in Taiji\, Japan\, where former dolphin train
er Ric O’Barry has come to set things right after a long search for rede
mption. In the 1960s\, it was O’Barry who captured and trained the 5 dol
phins who played the title character in the international television sen
sation “Flipper.” \n\nBut his close relationship with those dolphins –
the very dolphins who sparked a global fascination with trained sea mamm
als that continues to this day -- led O’Barry to a radical change of hea
rt. One fateful day\, a heartbroken Barry came to realize that these dee
ply sensitive\, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures so beautiful
ly adapted to life in the open ocean must never be subjected to human ca
ptivity again. This mission has brought him to Taiji\, a town that appea
rs to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the sleek\, playful dol
phins and whales that swim off their coast. \n\nBut in a remote\, glist
ening cove\, surrounded by barbed wire and “Keep Out” signs\, lies a dar
k reality. It is here\, under cover of night\, that the fishermen of Ta
iji\, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry an
d an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat\, engage in an
unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling -- and the conse
quences are so dangerous to human health -- they will go to great length
s to halt anyone from seeing it.\n\nUndeterred\, O’Barry joins forces wi
th filmmaker Louis Psihoyos and the Oceanic Preservation Society to get
to the truth of what’s really going on in the cove and why it matters to
everyone in the world. With the local Chief of Police hot on their tra
il and strong-arm fishermen keeping tabs on them\, they will recruit an
“Ocean's Eleven”-style team of underwater sound and camera experts\, spe
cial effects artists\, marine explorers\, adrenaline junkies and world-c
lass free divers who will carry out an undercover operation to photograp
 h the off-limits cove\, while playing a cloak-and-dagger game with those
who would have them jailed. The result is a provocative mix of investig
ative journalism\, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that adds up to a
n urgent plea for hope. \n\nThe Cove is directed by Louie Psihoyos and p
roduced by Paula DuPre Pesman and Fisher Stevens. The film is written b
y Mark Monroe. The executive producer is Jim Clark and the co-producer
 is Olivia Ahnemann.

SUMMARY:A Sea Change
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a world without fish. It’s a frightening premise\, an
d it’s \nhappening right now. A Sea Change follows the journey of retire
d \nhistory teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happeni
ng \nto the world’s oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The \nDar
kening Sea\,” Sven becomes obsessed with the rising acidity of the \noce
ans and what this “sea change” bodes for mankind. His quest takes \nhim
 to Alaska\, California\, Washington\, and Norway as he uncovers a \nworl
dwide crisis that most people are unaware of. Speaking with \noceanograp
 hers\, marine biologists\, climatologists\, and artists\, Sven \ndiscove
rs that global warming is only half the story of the \nenvironmental cat
astrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide is \ndissolving in our oc
eans\, changing sea water chemistry. The more \nacidic water makes it di
fficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of \nthe food web to form their
shells. The effects could work their way up \nto the fish 1 billion peo
ple depend upon for their source of protein.\n \nA Sea Change is also a
touching portrait of Sven’s relationship with \nhis grandchild Elias. A
s Sven keeps a correspondence with the little \nboy\, he mulls over the
world that he is leaving for future \ngenerations. A disturbing and esse
ntial companion piece to An \nInconvenient Truth\, A Sea Change brings h
ome the indisputable fact \nthat our lifestyle is changing the earth\, d
espite our rhetoric or \nwishful thinking.\n \nA Sea Change is the firs
t documentary about ocean acidification. Chock \nfull of scientific info
rmation\, the feature-length film is also a \nbeautiful paen to the ocea
n world and an intimate story of a Norwegian- \nAmerican family whose he
ritage is bound up with the sea.

SUMMARY:Zombie Girl: The Movie
DESCRIPTION:When eight-year-old Emily Hagins saw Peter Jackson’s “The Fel
lowship of the Ring\,” it was life-altering. It was the moment she tran
sformed from a mere fan of movies into someone desperate to make her own
. She even wrote a fan letter to Peter Jackson to tell him so. To her
surprise\, he actually wrote back.Jackson put Emily in touch with Harry
Knowles\, editor of Ain’t It Cool News\, who also lived in Austin\, Texa
s\, which opened Emily up to the local film community. She gained acces
s to special movie screenings and began expanding her film palate. And
then she saw “Undead.”“Undead” was a zombie import from Australia. A lo
w-budget film with no stars. But Emily didn’t care. To her\, it was am
azing. After that\, her appetite for horror was insatiable. She landed
an internship on a horror film and even started writing her own feature
-length movie about a mysterious zombie-inducing contagion in the water.
Not long after her 11th birthday\, the script for “Pathogen” was compl
ete\, and Emily had already set her mind to shooting it.It took a while
to get things moving\, but she eventually held auditions\, casting 12-14
year-old kids. With a few adults thrown in there\, too. It was around
this time that the logistics of a 12-year-old actually making a feature
-length film started to catch up with Emily. Because of that\, her mom\
, Megan\, found her own role to be expanding.Megan and Emily had always
been best friends. As a huge movie-lover herself\, it was Megan who int
roduced Emily to “The Lord of the Rings” and sat by her side at every fi
lm she ever saw -- including “Undead.” So\, naturally when Emily decide
d to make a movie\, she wanted her mom’s help. And not just because she
needed a chauffeur and a credit card. They had no idea how much the ne
xt two years would test their relationship.Things started out simple eno
ugh. Emily shot chronologically\, which meant that the climactic zombie
apocalypse -- where everyone dies -- wouldn’t be a problem until later.
Which was good\, because she was making every mistake in the book. On
the first day she even forgot to say “cut” at the end of the scenes\, p
roviding much confusion for the actors. Plus\, it wasn’t easy to coordi
nate the schedules of half a dozen middle schoolers. And money was runn
ing thin. Which is why\, after only a couple months of sporadic shootin
 g\, things ground to a halt.Despite Emily and Megan’s best efforts\, it
appeared that “Pathogen” was dead. But\, come summer vacation\, Emily r
esurrected it like the zombies she so loved and rallied her cast and cre
 w. She scheduled 7 days of back-to-back filming to wrap it up. Megan h
ad to burn all of her vacation days at work\, but she was there to help.
In a long-shot attempt to raise desperately need funds\, Megan even ta
lked Emily into applying for a Texas Filmmaker grant\, though the compet
ing applicants were mostly three times her age.Armed with new ideas\, th
ey dove into the final week with a script more ambitious than it had eve
r been -- which led to more problems. Some scenes had so many character
s that Emily confused the actors’ schedules. And Megan’s endurance bega
n to wane as the pressures of being a full-time employee\, movie produce
r\, and mom took their toll. Emily was demonstrating a new confidence\,
with her experience giving her better command of her actors\, but by th
e end of the week they were all near their breaking points. And then th
ings broke. The day after the epic climax -- where Emily directed two d
ozen zombies in full makeup\, complete with an aerial crane shot -- she
learned her hardest lesson\, yet. She forgot to cue her tape and record
ed over some of the footage. It was heartbreaking. She had to reshoot
the lost scenes and try to find the energy to start editing. By this po
int the debt was mounting\, and Megan worried that they couldn’t afford
to finish. As luck would have it\, the Texas Filmmaker’s Production Gra
nt gave a welcome boost by making Emily its youngest recipient ever. It
was just what they needed to help slug out the next nine months -- a gr
ueling period of editing\, reshoots\, and more editing. After two years\,
Emily’s directorial voice was maturing. She made decisions with confid
ence and grappled with the difficult fact that she no longer shared a ci
nematic vision with her mom. In the past\, Emily had defaulted to Megan
on many decisions\, but now she stood her ground and insisted that the
film be done her way. It marked a turning point in their relationship.A
s they prepared to premiere “Pathogen” before a sold out crowd\, Emily r
ealized that it was unlikely they’d ever work together again like they h
ad on this. And Megan was coming to terms with the fact that thirteen-y
ear-old Emily was growing up. “Pathogen” was once-in-a-lifetime experie
nce\, but now it was over. As a filmmaking team\, Megan and Emily were
through. But as a mother and daughter\, they had grown so much that it
didn’t matter. And luckily\, the zombie movie that started out as the f
ar-fetched dream of little girl would forever be there to remind them of
  that.

SUMMARY:Waiting For Armageddon
DESCRIPTION:WAITING FOR ARMAGEDDON delves into the heart of America's 50-
million member Evangelical community\, using intimate portraits and arch
ival footage to explore how literal belief in Biblical prophecy -includi
ng the Rapture and Armageddon - exerts a dangerous influence on U.S. rel
ations in the Middle East. The film opens with portraits of three Evang
elical families –James and Laura Bagg\, a Connecticut couple who work as
military jet-propulsion engineers\, Tony and Devonna Edwards in McAlest
 er\, Oklahoma\, and Dr. H. Wayne House in Salem\, Oregon - all certain t
hat upon Christ's Second Coming they will be 'raptured' or lifted into t
he skies to join Christ while the rest of humanity suffers for seven yea
rs during “The Tribulation.' “Christ will come back with a sword on his
side. And\, he will come back as the ultimate judge of the world. We’r
e going to be behind him with\, I believe\, swords in our hands and we’r
e going to be his army. And\, this battle…the blood from this battle wi
ll be as high as a horse’s bridle. It’s just something mankind has neve
r witnessed before.” Laura BaggThe Edwards' daughters\, in particular\,
struggle with their own future. If they are raptured soon\, how will t
hey ever marry\, or have children of their own?“It doesn’t seem fair. I
mean\, you know\, your grandparents have lived these long lives\, have a
ll these stories to tell you. And\, they’ve kind of adjusted to the fac
t that\, you know\, they’re not going to live terribly much longer. And
\, so\, you’ve grown up hearing all these stories and you want your own
stories. And\, you want to live these experiences yourself. And\, if y
ou’re done at 24\, then there’s only so many experiences you get to have
.” Despite their very different lives and locations\, all three families
find the modern world laden with symbolism that suggests the End Times
are at hand\, and they proclaim the immense importance of Israel\, where
the battle of Armageddon will leave the earth ravaged\, before Christ c
reates a new and perfect world. The film then follows Wayne House and fe
llow minister Robert Dean as they lead a Christian Study Tour group to I
srael -- among the tens of thousands of Evangelicals who pour into the H
oly Land each year. As Wayne and Robert baptize their entourage in the
River Jordon\, sing the US national anthem on the Sea of Galilee\, procl
aim love for Israel\, and describe how the Dome of the Rock\, one of the
holiest sites in Islam\, must be destroyed in order for Jesus to return
\, a revealing and controversial relationship between Christian Evangeli
cals\, Jews\, and Muslims emerges. Finally\, we follow Wayne House and R
obert Dean to a massive gathering in Dallas\, Texas\, where Evangelicals
debate\, in highly sophisticated terms\, the need to spread Biblical li
teralism to counter the dangerous effects of post-modernism. The climax
of the conference comes as Pastor John Hagee\, the enormously influenti
al Texas Minister of an 18\,000-member megachurch\, declares\, 'World Wa
r III has started.' “There is a war between Islamofascism and freedom.
There is a war between the culture of death and those who love life\, li
berty and the pursuit of happiness. It is a war WE MUST WIN. The Bible
says that you\, ladies and gentlemen\, are the light of the world. May
God anoint each of you and there can be a spiritual awakening in this co
untry. That Christ will be seen as the answer. For there is no other n
ame given among men whereby we might be saved.” Pastor John HageeBy por
traying the Evangelical apocalyptic worldview from within their communit
y\, WAITING FOR ARMAGEDDON seeks to clarify the elusive relationship bet
ween Christian Zionists and Jews\, and foster dialogue among dissenting
groups. In the end\, the film asks whether this large American voting b
lock is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of international holy war.

SUMMARY:The Voice
DESCRIPTION:Rescued by a concerned neighbor from his abusive father\, 7-y
ear old Onyok is brought to a shelter for abused children. Amanda\, the
shelter's owner-founder realizes that Onyok is unable to speak\, caused
by a physical trauma that damaged his larynx. On the first day of his st
ay in the shelter he hears the faint sound of a violin being played from
far off. This strange but beautiful music that has captivated Onyok's a
ttention comes from Amanda's reclusive brother Ariel\, who has turned ba
ck on his career as a concert violinist in Manila and came back to the f
amily house bearing a terrible guilt. This is the beginning of a simple\,
yet moving friendship between Onyok and Ariel. Ariel's initial cynicism
over his sister's commitment to caring for abused children slowly melts
when he sees Onyok's intrinsic inclination to the violin. Onyok proves
to have inborn talents to the instrument that leads Ariel to teach the m
ute little boy.Amanda begins to worry\, however\, when Ariel begins to p
ush Onyok beyond his limits\, leading the boy away from dealing with his
own emotional issues as well as straining his new-found friendship with
Shirley\, a young precocious child in the shelter. In the course of the
film\, Ariel's secret guilt over the death of his sweetheart protege is
revealed. The question of Ariel's motives about him pushing Onyok's gift
ed talents to a similar level comes to the fore. Does Ariel really care
for Onyok's condition\, or is he pushing Onyok to fulfill a shattered dr
eam?Onyok's abusive father is slowly rehabilitated and the shelter is ev
entually preparing for a reconciliation between father and son. Ariel re
alizes that he does not own the child. And their friendship will have to
encompass both their individual issues -- hardly similar and yet resona
nt to both of them.Nobody knows whether Onyok's reconciliation with an a
busive parent will succeed. But one thing has remained inevitably clear:
  he has regained his voice.

ere trying to run into the United States. Sometimes\, without a thought
for the plight of the immigrants\, the boys chased them across the wast
eland and back across the border - just for fun. It was just one of tho
se games boys played to make themselves feel big. But high school's ove

SUMMARY:Women Of Faith
DESCRIPTION:The image of the Catholic nun brings to mind a lot of things.
Each person has their own view\, but there is a collective sense about
these women - that they are not like the rest of us. That they are so dr
iven by great faith and devotion to the Church that we cannot relate to
them. As the Church continues to play a role in a number of controversia
l areas of modern life\, the nun in her habit stands as a symbol of the
Church's positions on everything from abortion to war. In the process\,
she loses her own identity\, her own thoughts and opinions\, in the eyes
of the rest of us. 'Women of Faith' is a film that seeks to pull back t
he veil and allow women with intimate knowledge of the Church to speak t
heir minds about everything from homosexuality to women's ordination to
the Church's role in Latin America. Interviews include several active an
d contemplative nuns\, a former lesbian nun\, and a woman who became an
illicit Roman Catholic priest in the face of possible excommunication.

students to apply their creativity to solve problems\, while encouraging
them to embrace the emotional roller coaster of doing science. Over thr

SUMMARY:Oh My God\, It's Harrod Blank!
DESCRIPTION:Explores the life and adventures of the eccentric artist and
entrepreneur Harrod Blank\, a creator of spectacles such as the Camera V
an-- a Dodge van with 2000 cameras attached to it – and The Flash Suit-
a man’s suit festooned with hundreds of photo flash bulbs going off. The
film follows Blank from his youth spent in the woods with chickens\, to
his current multi-faceted career as filmmaker and art-car maven extraor
dinaire. A tireless champion of self-expression\, Blank chases dreams an
d attacks obstacles with a creative vigor that is refreshing to witness.
The first documentary feature by Berkeley filmmaker David Silberberg\,
Oh My God! It’s Harrod Blank! uses footage spanning two decades to celeb
rate the man just as it exposes his naivete\, and the particularly tryin
g effects his extroversion has on those around him. Blank's family\, fri
ends\, and girlfriends take turns criticizing\, advising\, and explainin
g a guy whose uncommon openness and resilience can tolerate such a forum
\, even as viewers laugh and squirm. Rounding out the film's point of vi
ew is Blank's own painful\, often hilarious examination of his personal
life and challenges\, from his need for attention to such obsessions as
encroaching baldness. Blank's spirited outlook is undeniably inspiring\,
and the film embodies a contagious affection for him as both bigger-tha
n-life and so very human. 'The pressure to conform is incredible\,' says
Blank\, 'but I don't care what other people think. The reason I'm alive
is to create.' With special appearances from Harrod Blank’s filmmaking
father Les Blank\, revealing details of his early career.

DESCRIPTION:By dawn\, the interchange of the 134 Freeway and Interstate 2
10 is already starting to thrum with traffic. But only a hundred feet a
way\, the Dervaes family has been up for hours. Their surprisingly tiny
green oasis is a working farm right in the middle of Pasadena. Once se
en as a nutty idea\, the family homestead now produces three tons of org
anic produce a year. Jules and his adult children\, Justin\, Ana and Jor

en thumb\, Jules’ adventures as a young man homesteading in New Zealand\
, and the sorrows and hardships their family has faced over the years\,
including divorce\, lawsuits and a stint foraging for recyclable cans.
We watch them wrestle with their quest to live a simple lifestyle even a
s their website\, “Path To Freedom\,” demands more attention from follow

dangles tantalizing prospects of a financial windfall. But what would

the Dervaes have grown stronger and found a tight knit community based o

SUMMARY:American Casino
DESCRIPTION:In the past year the federal government committed over 12 tri
llion dollars of taxpayer money to bail out Wall Street. Many people wo
uld like to know why. “I don’t think most people really understood that
they were in a casino” says award-winning financial reporter Mark Pittm
an. “When you’re in the Street’s casino\, you’ve got to play by their r
ules.” American Casino takes a look at who profited from those rules an
d who lost the game. \n\nBeginning on the dark December evening in 2000
in the U. S. Senate chamber\, when a friend of Wall Street slipped the
casino’s rules into American law\, we meet the players. A former Bear S
tearns banker candidly explains that the complex securities he designed
were “fourth dimensional” and sold to “idiots.” A senior Wall Street r
atings agency executive describes how he finally resigned rather than “g
uess” the worth of billion dollar securities. A mortgage loan salesman
admits how borrowers’ incomes were casually inflated to justify a loan.
A billionaire describes how he made a massive bet that people would los
e their homes and has won $500 million\, so far.
\n\nWe also meet the casino’s “chips.” Ordinary people in the city of
Baltimore whose investments in what was sold to them as the "American D
ream" turned into nightmares of debt and disaster. These are not the h
omebuyers of Wall Street legend who heedlessly “bought houses they could
n’t afford\," but instead these people took out loans they could probabl
y have afforded\, if the terms had not been obscured and if the casino r
ulebook had not classified them and their neighbors as “sub-prime.” As
American Casino reveals\, this is the grim truth at the heart of our cur
rent financial disaster. Filmed over twelve months in 2008 American Cas
ino takes you inside a game that our grandchildren never wanted to play.

SUMMARY:Dirt! The Movie
DESCRIPTION:For billions of years on planet earth\, Dirt leads a simple p
redictable existence until humans appear. Unlike other species they exp
ress a conscious love of Dirt. And Dirt\, couldn't be happier. But hum

DESCRIPTION:Like many guys\, Mark Foster struggles with the idea of marri

SUMMARY:Documentary Filmmaking:Making a Living
DESCRIPTION:One would have to be a slight be deluded to go into documenta
ry filmmaking for riches or fame\, but is it possible to even make a sus
tainable living as a non-fiction filmmaker? A recent Oscar nominated doc
umentarian was quoted as saying that she envied farmers\, because "at le
ast they are subsidized." Non-fiction films\, often expensive\, challen
ging\, years-long in the making\, are very taxing financially. Filmmake
rs often have to take on other jobs and find creative ways of funding.
This panel gets down in the trenches and looks at how to make a decent l

that many things in her life are coming full circle. She wants to buy an

s barren marriage is in stark contrast to her closeness with her 8 year
old daughter with whom she shares her hopes\, fears and innermost though

marriage\, it's lack of intimacy and her fears of her own mortality.Inga
's childhood was marred by her mother's illness and use of morphine to c

SUMMARY:The Way We Get By
DESCRIPTION:'The Way We Get By' is a deeply moving film about life and ho
w to live it. Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop g
reeters — a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport
to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq\, the film
quickly turns into a moving\, unsettling and compassionate story about
aging\, loneliness\, war and mortality. When its three subjects aren't a
t the airport\, they wrestle with their own problems: failing health\, d
 epression\, mounting debt. Joan\, a grandmother of eight\, has a deep co
nnection to the soldiers she meets. The sanguine Jerry keeps his spirits
up even as his personal problems mount. And the veteran Bill\, who clea
rly has trouble taking care of himself\, finds himself contemplating his
own death. Seeking out the telling detail rather than offering sweeping
generalizations\, the film carefully builds stories of heartbreak and r
edemption\, reminding us how our culture casts our elders\, and too ofte
 n our soldiers\, aside. More important\, regardless of your politics\, '
The Way We Get By' celebrates three unsung heroes who share their love w
ith strangers who need and deserve it.

Smith III collaborated with Nashville composer/musi
cian Patrick O’Hearn to create the fullest expression of the depth and s
ubtlety that is the arctic - an arctic eden... a polar bear sanctuary.

a dominant role in his father's work. Since Tom can no longer move his
hands he needs Spencer\, but he doesn’t want Spencer to take over. Furt
her complicating matters is the fact that Spencer and Tom’s wife (Spence

avoid each other\, but Tom’s paralysis brings them into frequent contact
because they are Tom’s primary companions. As Tom and Spencer build th

SUMMARY:Tales From The Catholic Church Of Elvis!
DESCRIPTION:The Mother Lode of all Dichotomies: the One Holy Roman Cathol
ic Apostolic Church\, and Fabulous Las Vegas! In 'Tales from the Catholi
c Church of Elvis!'\, Mercy Malick wraps the two together in a tightly-w
ound package that skips happily and harrowingly through eleven years as
a Catholic schoolgirl living in Sin City\, USA. With a passing nod to ev
erything from Monty Python to Benny Hill\, way beyond South Park and Nap
oleon Dynamite\, and well on the far side of recent films like Little Mi
ss Sunshine and the Farrelly Brothers fare\, 'Tales' is a remarkable imm
ersion in a world all its own. Staged within the framework of a shocking
ly schlock Vegas stage show at the eponymous Catholic Church of Elvis\,
'Tales' follows a young girl from her early fascination with Vegas glitz
 \, accompanied by prayer\, of course\, along a time-twisting series of a
dventures that bring into delightful juxtaposition brain-boggling epipha
nies that include colostomy bag as alternative to babies\, and pizza box
as indoor-outhouse. Much like our surrogates\, the peripatetic audience
of the Catholic Church of Elvis\, we stagger out of 'Tales' into the ga
rish neon night among the crowds of loafers\, losers\, and legitimately
weird\, our consciousness raised a bit\, and our heads still reeling at
what it must have been like to grow up Catholic in the least Catholic pl

DESCRIPTION:For one hundred years\, literally the entire history of Ameri
can movies\, critics have championed this medium they so unabashedly lov
 e. They began as consumer reporters\, advising on which movies were imp
ortant to see\, and why. Over time their role evolved and they became a
n essential part of the film-going experience by challenging audiences t
 o think more deeply – aesthetically\, politically\, spiritually\, intell
ectually – about the cinema. \n\nBut today\, film criticism is a profess
ion under siege. Within the construct of our dire economic crisis\; and\
, as newspapers and magazines lose advertisers and pages by the week\, f
ilm critics\, both old and young\, are losing jobs at an alarming rate:
28 reviewers have been fired or retired in the last several years\, acco
rding to Variety. There’s also an intellectual crisis: as young American
s read less and less each year\, and certainly read less seriously\, fil
m criticism is marginalized\, and critics dismissed as pompous intellect
uals\, out of touch with everyday\, blockbuster moviegoers. And yet\, fo
 reign films\, documentaries\, small independents depend\, as ever\, on l
earned reviewers to articulate their cause for an audience. What happens
to alternative cinema if film critics vanish? Or if\, as is increasing
ly true\, the Internet becomes the place for all discourse about the cin
ema? Can thousands of movie websites\, mostly amateur\, substitute for t
he cultural influence of knowledgeable professional critics? In the mids
t of this cultural crisis\, 'For the Love of Movies: The Story of Americ
an Film Criticism\,' the first documentary on this subject\, explores th
ese issues while tracing the little know but rich and sociologically fas
cinating history of film criticism. From the raw beginnings of criticis
m before 'The Birth of a Nation' to Bosley Crowther’s 27-year reign at '
The New York Times\,' from the incendiary Kael-Sarris debates of the 196
0s and 70s to the battle for audience between youthful on-liners and the
print establishment\, this documentary tells all.Produced by Amy Geller
(PBS’s 'Murder at Harvard' and 'The War that Made America')\, written a
nd directed by veteran 'Boston Phoenix' critic Gerald Peary\, 'For the L
ove of Movies' offers a unique insider’s view of the film critics’ profe
 ssion\, with commentary from America’s best-regarded reviewers\, includi
ng Roger Ebert ('The Chicago Sun-Times')\, A.O. Scott ('The New York Tim
es')\, Lisa Schwarzbaum ('Entertainment Weekly')\, Kenneth Turan ('The L
os Angeles Times'). We also hear from young\, articulate\, Internet voic
es\, including Harry Knowles (ainitcoolnews.com) and Karina Longworth (s
 pout.com).

SUMMARY:Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo
DESCRIPTION:Imagine cramming 128 million people onto an island the size o
f Montana – you would be pretty close to replicating the density of Japa
 n. Not surprisingly\, space is at a premium and ergonomic design is nex
t to godliness. Yet\, even in Tokyo\, the pinnacle of this figurative “
can of sardines\,” people of all ages still make room for a little bit o
f wilderness. It is only fitting that they have become captivated by nat
ure’s most efficient invention in space\, design and function – insects.
\n\nSold live in vending machines and department stores\; plastic re
 plicas included as prizes in the equivalent of a McDonald’s Happy Meal\;
the subject of the No.1 videogame MushiKing\; and from the smallest bac
kyard to the top of Mt. Fuji\, insects inspire an enthusiasm in Japan se
en nowhere else in this world. “Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo” explores t
he mystery of why Japan developed this unique enriching social relations
hip with insects. Working backward like a detective story\, the film unl
ocks the mystery behind Japan’s love affair with insects. First stop is
modern Japan where a single beetle recently sold for $90\,000. From the
re we are transported to the Edo period and the consequent explosion of
nature in art and war. Peering back to the early 1800s\, the first cric
ket selling business and the development of haiku and other forms of ins
ect literature are revealed. The historical adventure travels all the w
ay back to the 8th century and the stories of Emperor Jimmu who named Ja
pan the “Isle of the Dragonflies.” Along the way the film takes side tr
ips to Zen temples and Buddhist Shrines\, nature preserves and art museu
ms in its quest for the inspirations that sent Japan in this direction w
hile other cultures hurtled off towards an almost universal and profound
fear of insects. Interspersed with the philosophies of one of Japan’s
best-selling authors and anatomist\, Dr. Takeshi Yoro\, and scattered wi
th poetry and art from Japan’s history\, this film becomes about much mo
re than insects. The film quietly challenges the viewer to observe the
world from an uncommon perspective that will shift the familiar to the
fantastic and just might change not only the way we think about bugs\, b
ut the way we think about life.
