One would have to be a slight be deluded to go into documentary filmmaking for riches or fame, but is it possible to even make a sustainable living as a non-fiction filmmaker? A recent Oscar nominated documentarian was quoted as saying that she envied farmers, because "at least they are subsidized." Non-fiction films, often expensive, challenging, years-long in the making, are very taxing financially. Filmmakers often have to take on other jobs and find creative ways of funding.
